England DISCARD Eddie Jones after a dismal run of results with the Australian’s seven-year reign coming to an end just nine months before the World Cup… and Leicester’s Steve Borthwick is lined up to replace him
Eddie Jones has been sacked as England manager, ending his seven-year reign.
A dismal run of five wins from the last 12 Tests led the RFU to pull the trigger and dispose of him within a year of the World Cup. Sportsmail revealed that Jones would get his marching orders and the ax fell on Tuesday morning.
England’s miserable autumn, with a crushing defeat to South Africa and a narrow loss to Argentina, exposed the team’s problems, which had been festering for some time. Steve Borthwick is expected to be named as the new head coach.
Jones repeatedly claimed the defeats and under-performances were part of the wider plan to prepare for the World Cup in France next year.
But those excuses haven’t gone away after the RFU’s assessment of the team’s and Jones’ performance.
The 62-year-old took part in a meeting with his RFU bosses and the secret review panel on Monday afternoon. There it was decided that he would be relieved of his duties.

England have looked lost for some time and their recent results have been poor
The board ratified the decision Tuesday morning.
Public opinion turned against Jones, who led England to the final of the last World Cup, where they suffered defeat to South Africa after the last series of games.
Japan’s lone win of the autumn came and while an impressive rally was staged against New Zealand, an ill-disciplined defeat to Argentina and a feeble capitulation to the Springboks led to boos from the Twickenham faithful.
A deal is thought to have been made to integrate Borthwick into England from June, but he will now be tasked with overseeing a resurgence in the Six Nations ahead of next autumn’s World Cup.
Steve Borthwick was a coach under Jones before leaving for Leicester and will now look to revive the national squad for the Six Nations next year
